Hazing [24 Mar 2006|02:10pm]
answer_seekers
Hello, we are two students at Rochester Institute of Technology currently engaged in an independent study project addressing the issue of hazing. The goal of this project is two-pronged - we wish to discover the prevalence of hazing in the state as well as get your opinion on what should be done about it, if anything.

Under the lj-cut is our survey, which asks a variety of questions about your personal experiences with hazing, and we would greatly appreciate it if you could take a minute or two from your time to fill it out really quickly. We even have questions at the beginning for those who have never experienced hazing but wish to share their opinion on the subject. Additionally, each question gives you the option to answer in more detail beyond the choices we have already provided. We encourage you to take advantage of this if you have more include in your answer.

Your responses to this survey are anonymous, so please do not put your name (or any information that would identify you) anywhere on this survey. You may quit the survey at any time and for any reason, or you may decline to answer any of the questions, but your responses to every question are important and we ask that you answer as many of the questions as you possibly can. You may post your answers however you like - under your user name, anonymously, or you may e-mail them to us at hazing.survey@gmail.com. All posts will be screened, so no one except you, us, and the community administrator will be able to see your responses.

Please inform us of any questions, concerns, or feedback you might have. Thank you in advance for your time.

WOW!

when I was a kid ... back in the mid 1980's my family and friends of the family use to go up to Frost Valley in the winter time for a weekend to celebrate christmas time. It was always a really awesome weekend because Frost Valley is in the middle of nowhere and there was so much snow and the wire bridge is beautiful in the wintertime ... not to mention, ice fishing, playing hockey with broomsticks and the giant christmas tree they put up every year in the lodge where they served food. I only ever visited the castle once ... because, well ... let's face it... unless you've never seen The Others, The Amityville Horror, 13 Ghosts, The Shining ... unless you've never even considered the possibilty of the supernatural... then you have to admit, The Castle in the winter time is fucking creepy and a little too spooky!

I always really loved the food ... the peanut butter cookies and applebutter was AMAZING.

now ... many years later, looking back on my childhood I was really blessed because that was the 1980's man... the age of Wallstreet, Ronald Reagan, Cocaine, Donald Trump, Gentrification ... i.e. the death of the best progressive ideals/politics of the 1960's ... the death of the peace & love generation. Jerry Rubin became a wallstreet power broker in the 1980s (nuff sed!). So it was in the good nature of my parents that my childhood was filled with fond memories of a simpler, quieter more zen like way of life. If only for a weekend every wintertime.

I went to a Bob Dylan concert with an FV friend, randomly bumped into 2 more, and then saw one of my old counselors. In addition, there was supposedly one of my friends at the concert that I didn't see. It was basically a booze and smoke infested Frost Valley reunion. THREE CHEERS FOR WELLNESS!!! So, besides Shea, Rachel, Max, Christina, Will, and the counselor Mark, did anyone else go to the concert last(friday)night?

I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

Phenomenal Woman
by Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies
I'm not cute or built to suit a model's fashion size
But when I start to tell them
They think I'm telling lies.
I say
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips
The stride of my steps
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please
And to a man
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees
Then they swarm around me
A hive of honey bees.
I say
It's the fire in my eyes
And the flash of my teeth
The swing of my waist
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
It's in the arch of my back
The sun of my smile
The ride of my breasts
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say
It's in the click of my heels
The bend of my hair
The palm of my hand
The need for my care.
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

But I had fun. It was probably the best school trip I've ever had. except that now I'm sick cuz it was way cold, and someone left the window open in my room. urg

today in acting i was talking to this girl abuot frost valley. shes been going 3 years and is not sure if she wanted to be a CIT. then i went off. i prolly talked like a good 30 min about my experiance and how i dont know what i would do if i had let that chance pass me by. by the time i was done she said after hearing me speak the way i did about it she really wants to go..she was surprised and how much fun i said the hike was, and how i dont even remember the hard parts because i had the most fun of my life on it.

so then
me and sophia were talking abuot frost valley..and i just miss it so much.

if i ddint have school tomorrow and my eyes wouldnt puff up i would be crying right now. i just wish i could go back more than anything. i want to relive last summer because it was hands down the most amazing experiance of my life.
i can think of no where else i would rather be than with those 10 people who i grew to love so much.

god i miss aaron wallman so much too. and not just becuase im like in love with him. i miss just being friends, he makes me laugh so much.

i miss being happy every single day with nothing to worry about except which one of us is going to trick a little kid into sticking his hand in the waste bin.

there are honestly no words to express what frost valley is to me. im so sorry im ranting on like this and im sure 98% of you wont read even up to this line.
it jsut makes me so sad that the group of people there last summer will most likely never ever be all together again like that. its such a depressing thought because everyone worked so well together and always had a great time.

i feel so bad for people who have never been to a camp like this. wheather it be spears or bernie or frost valley. The people at these places are the closest thing to soul mates i have ever felt.
i wouldnt trade it for literally anything.

ive been thinking about this whole JC thing.
and yeah, im upset but i just have to be thankful for what i got last year.

i never believed that the CIT year could be that amazing. I didnt truly understand the experiance or how cleaning the dining hall could be fun.
but after i was a CIT i would do everything all over again.
I would go on the hike in a second, because that was the best part of the whole thing.
The people i met and became so close with i wouldnt trade for the world.

im sure you guys all agree that at camp you are yourself, and I can talk to my camp friends about things i couldnt even tell my home friends.

im sure the other CIT's would agree- i wouldnt trade my CIT experiance for ANYTHING..not even to be a JC this year.

Hey all,

With Joe Elliott leaving Frost Valley - I thought of something that
could be
really neat to do for him before he leaves.

Joe has been at Frost Valley for 16 years....in those 16 years he has
met
many many people and had many many adventures. Think about all the
camp
stories that have developed over the past 16 years for Joe Elliott.

I think it could be neat if everyone helped take part in a little
"snapshot"
of Joe Elliott memories.

By Friday February 11th, 5pm EST - please email me your "joe elliott
memory" - it could be a little blurb or a long drawn out camp story
about
your favorite joe elliott memory. I will compile all of the memories
of Joe
Elliott and turn it into a little book for Joe to take with him on his
new
adventure.

and to get the ball rolling, here is a Joe Elliott Story that sticks
out in
mind: (please in your replies - do not reply to all - no need to flood
other's inboxes.)

"Joe vs The PAC"
In the the Summer of 1995, I was a PAC Counselor and Joe was a Forest
Counselor. On one particularly hot summer afternoon, PAC village was
enthralled in a cabin activity called "PAC: The Movie". Nothing like
20
something 15 year olds gallavanting around Frost Valley with a video
camera.
The movie turned out to be a really bad suspenseful action thriller.
We
learned that day that PAC campers couldn't act and counselors couldn't
direct to save their lives. However, we did have one moment of
cinematic
genius. In an effort to recreate a battle charge that would rival
Braveheart - PAC saw a young Joe Elliott walking on his period off. At
Olympic Circle, PAC campers formed ranks into one solid line and began
to
march in Joe's direction. Shouting "JOE JOE JOE!!!!" with every
uniformed
step, Joe paused at the foot of Olympic Circle and stared at this odd
sight
of 20 PAC campers marching towards him shouting his name. As they
marched
closer, a camper yelled "DOUBLETIME!!!!" and the PAC, as a collective
whole,
began to evolve from a marching entity into a quick trot in Joe's
direction.
Joe, at this point realized something was definitely up and began to
back
pedal across Olympic Circle, the road and onto Margetts Field. The
moment
he began to step back, all of PAC began to let out a bloodcurdling yell
and
proceed to run in a full on charge towards Joe Elliott. Joe, on his
period
off at the time, realized he had stuck around long enough and turned
tail
and ran. Completely unaware that he was being videotaped the entire
time
and that he was part of a movie, Joe believed he was racing for his
life.
With speed that would rival SeaBiscuit, Joe began to distance himself
from
the charging horde. He was racing towards the Wawa Hard Courts in
hopes
that the concrete jungle would serve as a safezone. Surely he thought
that
PAC wouldn't tackle him on concrete basketball court....would they
have? We
will never truly know, for Joe tripped on a rock and fell on the ground
just
short of the "safezone". Landing on the grass, one could only have
imagined
what went through Joe's mind as 20 PAC campers piled on him in
celebration
of their re-enacted "Braveheart" charge. Now at that particular point
in
the summer, Frost Valley was in the midst of a wicked drought and the
field
was a complete dust bowl. As a giggling camera man, catching this all
on
film, as the campers piled on Joe, a huge dust cloud covered them all
and
when the dust settled, Joe laid there with the campers surrounding him
and
chanting "JOE! JOE! JOE!" and then they formed ranks and marched off in
the
distance. Roll credits - PAC: The Movie had ended.

For 2 years Joe Elliott did his best Kill Bill impersonation exacting
revenge on those camp staff in the form of pranks and he had his
revenge....but that is another tale of Joe Elliott for another day.

The End.

-Jeff Daly

I'm Julie, I live in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and I'm going to be a JC in MAC this summer sessions 1 and 2.

I went to Frost Valley for 6 years (oh yes Pokey-Windsong and Sycamore) until last year when I did NOT get into CIT, but now I'm going back. I don't know if there's anyone that didn't get into CIT this year reading this, but if so, remember that it doesn't necessarily mean you can't go back. I also was able to do a lot of cool things by not being in CIT. Not to say that being a CIT isn't awesome because I know everyone loved it, but just know that it's not the end of the world and not even the end of Frost Valley either.

That said, I hope everyone has a great summer this year, whether at Frost Valley or not, because either way it'll be great.

This was an e-mail sent out by Joe Elliot. It's so sad, especially the last line. Then again, I might just be overly nostalgic since I'm not going back this summer for the first time in forever. (If any of you want the contact information he gave out, contact me because I didn't want to put it up here. e-mail: illeatyouwhole@yahoo.com or aim: parodyofangel)

Subject: Time for one last circle

Greetings from Frost Valley YMCA!
Well boys and girls, there comes a point in every persons life when the
signs are on the wall......
A couple of weeks ago, I found out my sign was on the wall.
That is why with a very heavy heart and plenty of reservations, I have told
Matt and Frost Valley YMCA that I will be leaving Feb 18 and will not be
coming back. I know that for some, you might have been able to see
this coming, and for others, this might come as a complete shock. Unfortunately their has been some unfortunate incidents that have made me come to the conclusion that it is best for me to pack it in and head out. I am not sure what my path will really show me and at times I am pretty scared and nervous. I would like nothing more to the head out west in a few months, but for the time between that, I will be moving down to North Carolina with my dog.
I know that whatever happens to me in the next few years, that Frost Valley YMCA has been my home for the past 16 summers. I feel as though in leaving, I leave with the fondest of memories here at Frost Valley Summer Camp. You have all played a great role in making this place I call home a great home. I hope that in the future, you will all be able to look back at Frost Valley with the same great memories that I have. Regardless if you are still here in a few years or leading your own new adventure, know that Frost Valley will always be a place that you can call home.
I hope and wish that you can all enjoy this summer and the summers in the future, and know that in my opinion, you make this place better every summer. It has been a privilege and an honor to be able to get to know all of you and call you my friends and family. I hope that we can all stay in touch in the future and still be able to talk from time to time. I am sure that I will be interested in your lives outside of FV just as much as your lives inside of FV. Remember, if you are ever in NC, please give me a ring, my number is ___________ and I will be able to receive e-mails at ____________ after Feb. 18th.
My new mailing address will be:
